WHEN OLD PEOPLE GO TO SCHOOL…

Having been a trained teacher at Siriba Teacher’s Training College in the Western part of Kenya, I had a deep and determined resolve to finish illiteracy by providing the fountain of knowledge through education. When I graduated, I was very eager to teach; to deliver academic intellectualism to learners. Just as was the norm, I was immediately posted to Karima Girls High School. This was a school deep in the slopes of the Aberdares Ranges. I was to majorly teach the precious girls English and CRE, Christian Religious Education that is. With the zeal of a new graduate, I delivered with a lot of self drive. In addition to this, I served as the Christian Union patron. This was something I loved since I recognized that building a character with Godliness would work wonders for the ambitious girls. All this happened before I got the call to pursue the Great Commission.

As time went by, the passion for the harvest completely got hold of me. Many souls that were receiving Jesus into their lives in the local Kinangop area needed to be discipled. The only solution was to quit and shepherd them.
After quitting, many doors were opened and one of the major one where people had never heard of Jesus was Turkana. Here, they only knew Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi the first and second Kenyan presidents respectively. They were so surprised about this new person they had never heard of. Their eagerness to listen about this man encouraged me in the face of the challenging environment that they were in; hot weather in a desert, no food or water. But the happiness to welcome this Jesus they heard was golden.
When we were about to leave, we gave them bibles. Unknowingly, this would not help them. They neither knew how to read nor write. How would they grow to know God through His word?

Later in the evening, as I was enjoying the waves along the shores of Lake Turkana, a brilliant idea came to me; an adult school. Wow. Adults too can learn to read and write. This should help the new Turkana converts.
Months later, with the help of my friends, Naotin Adult School was born. The school has brought a lot of change to the communities in Turkana. Several people have even gone through the school and become pastors in churches they have planted. The result of this is that these people have transformed their community by helping them embrace Jesus. In an otherwise banditry prone area, security has been restored. The locals have also embraced an alternative economic activity, farming. Education founded on God brings massive change in ways we cannot imagine. We thank God for this.
